Hey guys! The club t-shirts that we mentioned in the past few meetings just came in. Each shirt is $7.50 and this can be paid online or to the bookkeeper. We do have 30 shirts at the moment, and will put in another order based on how many people pay and fill out survey. The deadline for the survey and payment will be October 28th. We hope to get all of the shirts out to the members by early November-Thanksgiving break, as the order forms take quite a while to process.
In addition, we have decided on making this year's club fee 20 dollars as we are doing more activities/competitions compared to previous years and will need more money. Please pay the fee by October 28th either online or to the bookkeeper. I will be checking who paid on the 28th so please do so by then. At today's meeting, you heard about the Mock Science Bowl we will be hosting next week (10/18)! You will have the option of competing in the Science Bowl format with your friends. Rules: There will be teams of 4 or 5 (I will accept teams of 3, but it is not recommended). Two teams will be facing off against each other, each with 4 members. The fifth may be used as a substitute during halftime. Each team will have a captain, whose role will be explained later. There are two types of questions, toss-up and bonus. Toss-up questions are offered to both teams, and whoever buzzes in first may answer it (only one answer per team). These questions can either be short answer or multiple choice and will be read out loud. Bonus questions are offered to the team who answers a toss-up correct. During toss-ups, members may not discuss with each other. However, bonus questions do permit discussion. You will have 5 seconds to buzz in for toss-ups and 20 to answer a bonus. They will be 4 and 10 points respectively. Only the captain may answer a bonus question from a team and all other responses will be ignored. The rounds will be split into two 4 minute halves, with a 30 second break to facilitate substitutions (the 5th member) if needed. Whoever has the most points at the end of the round will move on up the ladder until they are either booted out, or win the competition. The official rules in their entirety can be found here:http://science.energy.gov/…/coordinator%…/2017_nsb_rules.pdf If you would like to compete, gather your team and have the captain fill out this google form by the end of this week:https://goo.gl/forms/PJwWYRSlObVHqO2y1 Here is a video of the nationals for 2016 (the questions will not be nearly as difficult for us): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AzRDo14N4-o . It starts at 27:30 Members of the actual science bowl program will be required to compete with their assigned teams. Prizes will be given to the winning team! Bring your friends and get hyped!
